This John Travolta-starring military-themed thriller hardly distinguished itself with critics, who almost universally lambasted its overwrought ambience and painfully obvious plot points a whodunit that begged the question "whyd ya make it"? But even the most turgid Hollywood fare can have its delightful musical surprises, and thats where The Generals Daughter redeems itself. Veteran Carter Burwell turns in a brooding orchestral score that finely underplays the histrionics with subtlety and emotional weight. But its Greg Hale Joness ingenious digital reworking of half-century-old Library of Congress remote recordings (made in cotton fields and prisons) of African American folk music and spirituals thats the real revelation here. The opening "Sea Lion Woman" is both haunting and unforgettable, a gratifying reminder that studio alchemy can enhance the humanity of music as well as sublimate it. Never have I spent so much time on a movie soundtrack. The intro song "She began to Lie" is haunting, and lead to many hours of research on the internet. Check it out. If your into this sort of thing, then I think youll be interested in its origins.

Similarly, "Mighty Good Road" follows the same theme, and both pieces set the flavor for the location and theme of the movie so nicely.

I also finally found the name of a piece of music Ive heard a dozen times in various productions and never knew what it was. O Fortuna. It also has an interesting history.

The entire soundtrack is wonderful and well worth adding to your collection.

While nothing in the film works very well except perhaps the chemistry between Travolta and Stowe, the sublime soundtrack is another story. Descriptions such as "haunting" and "soul moving" are right on the money, one might also add ineffable to the list.

This movie was quite the pile of dung. But the soundtrack, that MUSIC is so solid that its certainly one of the most ingenious scores in the last decade. Much hype has been ascribed toward the Library of Congress remixes, songs featuring new background beats coupled with pleasant nego-songs (see also Mobys remixes from his Play album for a close comparison). Those songs are the highlight, no question, but Burwells songs are not to be overlooked.

Echoes of Fargo, Hamlet, Barton Fink, and The Man Who Wasnt There are present here, but Burwell isnt a leech when it comes to his music, and he takes a splendind, darker direction with this score than, yes, even Fargo and Hamlet - as dark as those were.

Burwell aficionados wont be disappointed here, neither will fans of darker film scores along the lines of David Julyans Memento, Thomas Newmans Flesh and Bone, and especially Philip Glass Fog of War.

I heard a great arraingement of "Berta" during the movie "The Piano" which stared Charles Dutton. I thought that arraingement or at least some approximation was on this CD but it turns out that track 8 O Berta is a disapointing version of that great tune. Words fail to describe this incredibly powerful album. Ive had a copy since the 60s, and still have an unopened LP copy in my "vault" (along with the first Roberty Johnson LP). Luckily, I dont have to describe the power of the music - you can click on the samples, and hear for yourself.

Reams of praise have been heaped on this album, and every word has been an understatement.

If you have any interest whatever in American folk music or in blues or jazz, you either have a copy of this or should get one. This is the absolute peak of Lomaxs years of collecting.

Incredibly clean sound for the 40s, all well recorded, musically superb pieces, each a perfect gem of its kind, preserving some of the oldest and best of American music, done by some of the finest singers youve never heard of.

You will listen to this again and again.

I was blown away when I listened to this CD for the first time. The recording is great. I didnt expect too much due to the time frame of the recording, but the quality is impressive. I bought this hoping to find more tracks like "Po Lazarus" from the "O Brother Where Art Thou" Soundtrack. What I got was much more.

As far as I can tell, the sound is nicer on this release than the old Legacy "Negro Prison Blues and Songs," but unfortunately there are six (really good) tracks at the end of that CD that arent on vol. 1 or 2 in the Rounder set. I think its worth it to get the older Legacy release, and then vol.2 from Rounder to have it all. These are astounding compilations.

I really had no idea what i was in store for. But for those who love black, southern and prison history, spirituals, and are thirsting for music in its purest form, buy this CD!!! It has wonderful chants, commentary from Lomax, narrative from the inmatesand even clanking from the axes. You can hear the suffering and longing in their voices. You can hear the humor in may of the lyrics. Be sure to read the booklet so that you can get a clearer understanding of it all. It is a wonderful piece of recorded history. you may also want to buy the book Worse than Slavery, by Oshinsky so that you can get greater sense of exactly waht they are thinking about. One more thing..You will totally feel the energy of 22.

I have spent a fair amount of time recently reviewing, individually and on various artist compilations, performers from the 1960s urban folk revival. You know Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Dave Van Ronk, Eric Von Schmidt and the like. I have also reviewed the earlier performers who influenced them on the more traditional folk side like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. There was another component of that search for roots that entailed heading south to the Mississippi Delta, the Georgia Sea Islands, and the hills and hollows of Southern Appalachia to get religion on the rural roots musical scene.

I mentioned in a review of the performers who influenced the 1960s urban folk scene that those efforts did not fall from the sky but had been transmitted by earlier performers. That, my friends, applies as well to the search for roots music. I also mentioned that we all, later when we understood things better, appreciated that John and Allan Lomax (here in this many-volumed series carrying on his fathers work in the late 1950s) did yeomens service to roots music by their travels into the hinterlands in the 1930s and 1940s (and had Pete Seeger tag along for a year and thus serve as a little transmission belt to the latter generation) to find blues, mountain music and other types of American traditional music. Most of us got our country blues infusion second-hand through our addiction to local coffeehouses and the performers who provided us entertainment. The performers we listened to, in turn, learned their material from the masters who populate this CD.

This CD contains a nice assortment of Georgia Sea Island tunes, wage work songs, prisoner work songs and some of the most interesting simple religious music I have heard in a while. I would note in regard to that last point the version of "Beulah Land" done by John Davis and Bessie Jones (who also stands out on other selections here) Sidney Carters "Pharaoh" and, by far my favorite, The Thornton Old Regular Baptist Church Congregations "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah". A few centuries ago during the Protestant Reformation or a little later during the English Revolution in England I would have heartily joined in on this one.

Truth be told this disc is not for everyone and I hope that this description will help those interested in hearing the ancestors of many major music forms find a good listen. Alan Lomax made an attempt to record the provincial musical styles in their home and on the participants own terms. What you get are real individuals singing and playing instruments for reasons that no longer exist today to pass the day at work, to pass along local stories and traditions, to pass the time in jail, to provide expression for small communities, and to praise their gods where the lived and breathed. There was not a dollar to be made for any performance on this disc, and though we pay to hear it now, it had an effect on the musicians and singers. This music is not polished but it is a fantastic cd based on its content and not its production value. You wont hear music like this often in your life.

Ive played this CD over and over and still love every minute of it. The music is so varied, so beautiful. I now want to get other albums recorded by Alan Lomax, a genius for recognizing and recording great music. Highly recommended for anyone who loves uncommercial melodies and pure voices.

This DVD is extremely well-done, with detailed discussions of equipment, physical/mental preparation, ball delivery, reading & adjusting to lanes, and making spares. Parker Bohns presentation style is also excellent -- very clear, relaxed, and engaging.

Equipment discussions have useful information for everyone from beginner to expert, and cover everything from proper fit for a ball (whether conventional grip, semi-fingertip, or full fingertip), shoes, peripheral/extra equipment (e.g., finger inserts, wrist supports, tape, rosin bags, etc.).

The spare-making section was especially well-done, and includes very detailed diagrams, discussions, and demonstrations for all the common leaves. Importantly, this is shown for both left-handers (by Parker Bohn III) and for right-handers (by Brad Angelo).

Also valuable were the "fireside chats" between Angelo and Bohn, during which they discussed many things they have learned over the years that have made the biggest difference to them.

I absolutely recommend this DVD to bowlers of all skill levels, whether youre just starting out, or have been carrying a 200 average for years - theres something in here for everyone.

I chose this boxed set over the Library of Congress Collection because the latter did not list "This Land is Your Land." The re-mastered recordings are of good quality and the collection is comprehensive. Each of the four CDs contains a booklet of information about the songs and surrounding events.

The real motivation to own this set is, of course, Woodys songs. Using familiar melodies combined with wry narratives and heart-breaking stories, Woody paints a portrait of America from the turn of the century, through the depression and dust bowl years, to WWII and after. The songs are haunting while being deceptively complex and simple at the same time. In this collection, the gravity of his more serious work is artfully countered by his very funny narrative and nonsense songs (one of my favorites in the latter category is "Mean Talking Blues"). Folk music aficionados or not, this collection will contain that will touch everyones heart.

A final note: Woody Guthrie is perhaps one of the most under-rated guitar players in the genre. The recordings dont do justice to the subtly of his picking style. The same can be said of his abilities with the harmonica.

Woody wrote "This Land is Your Land" on 23 February 1940.It is his best known song and one of the most widely sung songs in the United States.Woodys stated reason for writing it is possibly open to criticism--he said he was tired of hearing Kate Smith,one of the nations most popular singers during the 1930s,sing "God Bless America".So he voiced a different perspective on the United States,ending each verse with "God blessed America for me".Later he changed the last line to "This land was made for you and me".
Woody wrote six verses,of which two were about Great Depression
experiences and were not heard when the song was first issued in 1951.

No complaints other than the sound quality--which isnt very good. Its O.K. on some songs, but all in all, its pretty poor. Everything else is great and at about fifty cents a song its a really good deal. The liner notes are really great as well and theres a pamphlet for each CD. Ive just recently started to listen to Woody Guthrie but have been a Dylan fan for a long time. Its really neat to see all of the similarities in some of Dylans early work with Guthries. Dylans CD "Good as I Been to You" actually has a few songs that are on this CD. Thats a great album as well--1991 I believe. All in all a great deal and great music.

Like countless others, I started listening to Woody Guthries recordings as a fan of Bob Dylan. Im happy to say that listening to Woody has enhanced my appreciation for him as a singer and songwriter, and also has made me appreciate Dylan more once I was aware with what elements of Guthries influence he incorporated into his art and which he expanded upon. I highly recommend purchasing this entire collection (rather than just one or two discs, since theyre available individually) along with the essential Dust Bowl Ballads as a strong foundation for a Woody Guthrie collection (not to mention his amazing autobiography, Bound for Glory).

What can you say about a 4-disc retrospective of such a prolific, improvisational songwriter? In my reviews I generally talk about some specific songs, but there are so many here that Ill try not to get boring and long-winded with too many details. The discs are each loosely-based on a different theme and are named (1) "This Land is Your Land," (2) "Muleskinner Blues" (3) "Hard Travelin" and (4) "Buffalo Skinners." Although the track sequencing isnt too strict, the songs on each generally do fall in the categories of patriotic, interpretive ballads (mostly classic folk covers), topical/working class ballads, and cowboy ballads. As youll find out, though, these labels arent too exclusive, and Woody writes and sings about pretty much anything you could imagine, and he sure was good at it.

As the legend goes, Woody wrote on anything he could get his hands on, and composed songs on the fly (freestyle rap anyone?), so this historical document is also quite amazing considering Asch told Guthrie he could drop by and be recorded whenever he wanted. These off-the-cuff recordings not only represent the broadness of Woodys musical vision, but also a pretty accurate representation of the spontaneous singing he did while wandering the country, living (and hearing about first-hand) the lives of the characters in his songs.

And what great songs they are. The tracks range from classics you may or may not have known Woody wrote and sang "This Land is Your Land," "Grand Coulee Dam," "Pretty Boy Floyd," "So Long, Its Been Good To Know You," "Hard Travelin," and "Car song," to name a few. What makes the wealth of music here extraordinary is hearing Woody come up with social anthems, dark ballads, heartbreaking stories, and hilarious blues time and time again. Although folk music is simple (fans of more complex chord changes and instrumentation may take a few listens to appreciate what it is about Woodys music that makes it so classic), the magic is in the storytelling and lyrics. Some of his talking blues like "Talking Hard Work" and "Mean Talking Blues," for example, are laugh-out-loud funny, especially on repeated listens.

Some people have griped about the sound quality, but I personally wouldnt have it any other way. The scratchy, old-timey production fits perfectly, and that analog sound probably accounts for much of Woodys timbre. Ill bet it wouldnt sound half as good if recorded in digital. Woodys signature flat-picked acoustic and occasional harmonica makes most of the accompaniment, although Cisco Houston and a few others make appearances singing and playing acoustic instruments, so theres not really any complex overdubbing that is in danger of being covered up by the quality. As for Woodys voice, its like a warm blanket or the familiar sound of a grandfather telling a story. Even though its simple, theres a warmth and magic, subtle wit there all the time that only Woody could pull off so genuinely.

The liner notes only add to the quality of this treasure, providing info for each song, as well as great, informative biographical info. Taken together, this really is an academic historical document both on paper and on CD, but its also a real pleasure to listen to.

As you might have guessed, I highly recommend this collection, but if you dont have any Guthrie recordings yet, Id probably recommend the shorter Dust Bowl Ballads first, since its not as daunting in size or price. Once youre hooked, though, this is the next place to go. I hope you take the time to discover why Woodys such a legend, and treasure this set for years to come.

this is my favorite woody guthrie disc. the entire asch recordings series is wonderful, as well, but this cycle of short stories told through the medium of the folk song, about the Oakie migration during the great depression, is simply a riveting work of americana music. "tom joad - part 1 & 2," is my all-time favorite guthrie performance. its rhythmic drive, intensity, devotion to detail, and grand narrative structure make it one of the finest achievements in all of american folk music. this whole album is a stark and glorious achievement. mr guthries voice was singular, a voice with personality, full of feeling for the downtrodden, for the victims of unrestrained capitalism. no music collection should be without a healthy dose of woody guthrie. if yours has a hole in it where mr guthrie should be, this album makes for a perfect introduction to his work.

Woody Guthrie Dustbowl ballads is a historic folk classic. Woodys playing is good on gutiar and harmonica his voice is steady the songs are real good for the time. Woddy tells the story of the dustbowl with a keen sense of humor mostly. Pretty boy floyd Blowin down the road vigalanteman and the TomJoad songs show some anger. but Dirty old dust Dustpneumonia blues and Talkin dustbowl blues are funny. I aint got no home is my favorite. The booklet really is interesting Woody tells his story. im glad i got this.Great way to get to know Woody Guthrie.

Like Dust Bowl Ballads, the Columbia River Collection can be a bit tedious - guitar & harmonica and Woodys vocals deliver traditional melodies and Woodys clever but unpretentious lyrics. Dust Bowl Ballads was a "concept album" before that term came into being, and so is this collection.

Dust Bowl Ballads has a more homogeneous sound, as the songs were recorded during one session at a New York studio. The Columbia River Collection gathers recordings from here and there, so the sound and recording quality varies from song to song. But Woody wrote nearly all, if not all, of these songs during a month-long stint with the government-sponsored Bonneville Dam project. This collection is more optimistic than Dust Bowl Ballads Woody only protests that Uncle Sam doesnt sponsor more projects like the Bonneville Dam.

Woody was in his prime in the early 1940s, and every song here has some special quality to enlighten and amuse the listener. They celebrate Work and Utility and Ambition. Every American can be proud of them most Americans will learn something from them.

Woody Guthrie is the father of American Folk Music (Joe Hill would be the grandfather, Peter Seeger the uncle, and Bob Dylan the poet laureate). Guthrie worked for the Bonneville Power Administration in the month of May 1941 as a "information consultant" for the U.S. Department of the Interior. During that month he wrote 26 sons about the dams being built on the mighty Columbia River that flows between Oregon and Washington to the sea. Seventeen of those songs are collected on this 1988 album that reflects one of the most productive periods of Guthries prolific career and some of his best songs such as "Hard Travelin," "Grand Coulee Dam," and "Pastures of Plenty."

The songs on the "Columbia River Collection" were necessary because the BPA was engaged in a political battle in the Pacific Northwest to own the power being produced by the Columbia River dams. There were elections that would determine if the region would have public or private ownership and distribution of electricity, and Guthries songs were basically political ads on the BPAs behalf. The BPA made a short film about the dams, "Hydro," and wanted to make a feature length musical film to show in story and song how the power generated by the dams, administered by the BPA, would bring a better life to the citizens of the Pacific Northwest. Folklorist Alan Lomax heard about the plan and recommended Guthrie to write the songs. Guthrie was unemployed so he drove up from southern California to Portland with his wife Mary and their three children, packed in an old Pontiac. The 28-year-old singer auditioned for the BPAs director, Dr. Paul Raver, who gave Guthrie a 30-day contract as a temporary employed at the rate of $266.66 a month to write a song a day.

Here you will find a mixture of anthems, talking blues, and ballads from Americas troubadour. The signature song here would have to be "Roll on, Columbia," which credits Leadbelly as a co-writer because Guthrie uses a chorus from "Irene Goodnight." Students of folk music will notice that Guthrie borrowed from traditional folk songs including "Old Smokie," "Pretty Polly," "Muleskinners Blues," and others as well. Eleven of these tracks are Guthries original recordings, made in Portland, Oregon in 1941 but never released until now, including "Roll on Columbia" and "Roll Columbia, Roll." Only a few of the songs made it into the soundtrack of the actual film, "The Columbia," which was not released until 1948, at which point neither a propaganda film nor Guthrie songs were needed to prove the impact of the BPA on the Pacific Northwest. We are fortunate to have these recordings because in 1953 the Eisenhower administration ordered all copies of the film and its songs destroyed when it was decided Guthrie was a communist. But the acetate disks still remain and so do these songs.

Woody Guthrie certainly supported the working man and as indicated by the lyrics of "The Biggest Thing That Man Has Ever Done" he saw the dams on the Columbia River as monuments to the working class that were going to bring significant improvements to their daily lives. The other six songs, including "Pastures of Plenty," were previous released by Smithsonian Folkways. There is a lot to be said about finally hearing Guthrie sing songs like "Jackhammer Blues" that I know from Guthrie tribute albums and such. But what is important here is that you have most of Guthries songs from this period on a single album. Along with "Dust Bowl Ballads" this is one of the most thematic Woody Guthrie albums available and Rounder does a pretty good job of figuring out an order in which to put the tracks.

Singer, songwriter and more importantly a voice from the past depicting our nation as it were from the 1920s through the dust bowl and depression 30s to the early years of World War II.
Woody Guthries autobiographical Bound for Glory should be considered a classic, if not already. A literary work of art.

The first half of his biography enlightens the reader as to Woodys many adventures, tragedies and general life as a youth during the 20s and 30s. Some sad, some spirited and above all told with vehemence.
The remainder of his book is a get-down and travel throughout America by thumb and boxcar, witnessing the poverty, mistreatment and overall life on the rails, farms, "jungle" camps, skid row and waterfronts. A soulful perspective of what existence was really like from one who lived it so long ago.

His songs reflecting this era will live on for many years to come. A gem.

This was a really great book. Its hard to believe one man would be so talented as both songwriter and autobiographer. It all had a very Beat feel to it, but I might actually like it better than On The Road because its got all the fantastic enthusiasm for living, but its so completely devoid of pretense. It immediately jumped into my top 5.

The Hobo Philosopher

This book written by Woody Guthrie was also made into a movie. The movie starred David Carradine and Randy Quaid among others. I have never seen the movie and I had little idea what this book was about until I opened it up and started reading.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was not simply the story of a famous County singer and songwriters life, but a "Hobo-ing America" adventure story. It was written in the Mark Twain tradition - with all the down home and backwoods country dialect included.
I enjoyed this story - it is a "real" story about real people. Woody did a fine job in telling this story.
The book has great drama and pathos and would be enjoyable reading even if you didnt know who the heck Woody Guthrie was or what he turned into. I read it as a history novel and place it in the category with the "Grapes of Wrath" or "Gone with the Wind".

Essential reading for those that need a deeper understanding. There are many poetic passages, sad stories and a great reference to what America is like for those who were poor and often at odds with their country. This is a book that holds up so well today and will make you want more. Dylan probably brought you here in the first place. You wont be disappointed. Everybody should read this book.

This video really gets your heart pumping and makes you break a sweat. The video starts with two warm up songs ("Whos Zoomin Who" & "I Can Dream About You"). These warmup songs get you prepared for the five song workout ("Celebration", "Something Special", "Oh Shiela", "Mad About You", & "Bit By Bit"). These five songs give you a great workout. The tape ends with a cool down and stretch song ("Cool It Now"). Overall, this tape is great and I reccomend it to anyone who wants a good workout. For more dancing, try the 50s, 60s, & 70s tapes.

My mother rented this video along with dance away to the 60s and 70s when I was 5 or 6 years old and I never forgot the dance away series. Me never forgetting these videos, especially this video dance away to the 80s when I was only 5 yrs hopefully gives you an idea of What an excellent tape is. This tape is full of chart topping hits, and you will just have a very good time doing the exercises. I hope my review is helpful to you.

This low-impact aerobic workout is great for beginners that are hoping to enjoy exercising! The steps that are done to top 80s hits are clearly shown. An appropriate warm up and cool down period also is important, and this video talks about why this is so. The workout is timed very well...to the point one might not believe its time to cool down already! A very well made & easy to follow tape that is highly recommended for the beginner who doesnt know where to start.

Good workout for someone who is not a fitness freak!

I got this video for Christmas one year and was really appalled that someone would give it as a gift. I did need to lose some weight at the time. After I tried it though, I found out that I liked it and continued using it. It is really easy to get into after you do it a few times-it does take a few tries to get used to it so dont think that it will be easy right away. It is not an easy workout for someone who does not work out a lot so it is a good tape for a beginner. I did it for a few months and lost around 30 pounds with cutting back on junk food. The people who are in the video (with the exception of the instructor) are regular people who even screw up a couple of times so it is a relief to see that not everyone is a fitness freak. If you can get past the bad hair and 80s workout clothes, I think you will like it. The music however is really boring, it is not even good 80s music but it is not too fast or too slow so overall it is not that bad. I think that if you give it a chance, you will like it.

"When I look away I forget what yellow means. But I can look again. Sometimes theres something delicious in oblivion."

Sarah Polley writes and directs a faithful adaptation of Alice Munros short story "The Bear Came Over the Mountain," adding some effective symbolic touches of her own. "Nature never fools around just being decorative."

I doubt the film will help anyone dealing with Alzheimers, but Id be happy to be wrong.

I agree with those who say that the Alzheimers facility in the movie is too good to be true. Even if such a luxurious place were to exist, the cost would be far above a retired professors means, and from the looks of the cottage Fiona and Grant lived in, they did not have other sources of wealth. Also, for seemingly artistic effect (enabling a Christmas dinner scene with Aubrey and Fiona), the movie stretches out the period in which Aubrey was in the facility to over a year, which contradicts the reason given in both the short story and the movie for his stay and his wifes economic situation- that it was a short term placement so she could go on a trip and she could not afford to keep him there longer. The inconsistency grates, but it is not a fatal flaw.

I disagree with many of those who criticize the depiction of Alzheimers. I have had substantial experience with the condition as family member, friend, and volunteer. Alzheimers does not manifest itself in a single way. In the early stages, victims are aware of and frightened by what is happening to them, read about the disease, and often decide or agree to move into a care home with little or no prompting, as Fiona did.

Many patients do not manifest extreme, angry outbursts or many of the other symptoms reviewers felt Fiona should have exhibited. And I can tell you from experience, rapid declines or shocking behavioral or physical changes can, indeed, occur virtually overnight. Being separated from her husband for thirty days (as draconian and probably unreal as that policy is) in itself could trigger a major change. When my father was unable to make his daily visits to my mother, her condition radically deteriorated. A friend and I both characterized our mothers Alzheimers progressions as lengthy plateau periods punctuated by sudden drops followed by new, "lower" plateaus. While both mothers expressed frustration with their conditions by occasionally throwing their pills to the ground, pushing away food, or cursing inappropriately, they never raged and like Fiona, they remained "ladies." When Fiona enters the facility, she is far from the Depends-and-spoon feeding stage that she will eventually devolve to, as the movie hints, after she moves to the second floor. I think the movie realistically depicts a particular persons specific early and early-middle stages of Alzheimers.

I give the movie four stars, rather than five, because of the flaws mentioned in the first paragraph. I think the acting - particularly Julie Christies - was superb. The vacant or fearful look in her eyes and her lapses and attempts at covering humor were spot-on. The questions raised about love, the meaning of fidelity, and dealing with mind-robbing disease were well-wrought and worth pondering.

sad but good movie

this movie is about a couple, married for many years, who now face dementia in the wife. she knows what is happening and the movie does a decent job of demonstrating some of the many issues such a couple would face. i used it for educational purposes with future health care providers and found it helpful - although it does not include issues around finances and the health crisis in the US, it does do a good job of helping one appreciate a bit of this couples lives....

I thought this movie was very nice about a husband who is slowly losing his wife to Alzheimers Disease. It presents the decline of the wife to the point that she needs to go into an assisted living facility as we would call them in the US. The wife slowly declines and finds her own life in the institution as the husband finds some life besides the wife. But they do come together in their own way and in a their new life.
The story is good as is but is missing the worry about finances (the US health system), doctors (everyone seems to be more of a social worker), and the light side of dementia. I know when my father had dementia, he could very be very sweet and funny, utterly charming at times. Other people can get belligerent. Fighting about care is missing too. I remember staff who poorly paid and not always caring. This movie shows the gentle side of dementia - sad, but people arent worrying about how to pay, the care given and working with social workers who are not very sympathetic. Good movie and I couldnt believe Michael Murphy. It took a second viewing to realize that it was him. Very nicely done.

Imagine an Eighties update on a Forties "womens picture". . . but with Laura Petrie or Mary Richards as the long-suffering heroine. . .and Sam (Ted Danson) Malone as the cheating spouse!

Mary Tyler Moore is spunkily stalwart as the wronged wife but wise-cracking Christine Lahti steals the picture as the other woman. (Guess Valerie Harper was busy.) Plays like a jazzercise-era remake of the old Bette Davis/Mary Astor tear-jerker "The Great Lie." Movie never makes up its mind whether its a comedy or a drama but is oddly entertaining nevertheless.

This film, made in 1986, is an enjoying flick. I dont agree that the musical score is overbearing or way out of date. It fits the time period well.

Moore and the rest of the cast do a fine job. I especially enjoyed Moore, as she channels the personality of Laura Petrie from the classic Dick Van Dyke show. Christine Lahti plays Sandy, a woman who has a bit more in common with Moore and her husband, played by Ted Danson, than she thinks. The dinner party where they all meet (together with a very young-looking Sam Waterson) is quite amusing. Its also fun to see Waterson play a character very much different from his very somber, deliberate role in Law & Order.

Then tragedy strikes, and the two women confront each other in a new way.

(I also want to mention how attractive and fit Ms. Moore looked in this role. She was 50 when she made this film, and in her stint as an aerobics instructor, she looked 20 years younger.)

Overall, an enjoyable film.

Boy, this movie takes place in the 80s and at first you must get over how dated it is. The clothes are hilarious but not as much as the big hairstyles. Hilarious. But move beyond the opening drawn out areobics class and a very entertaining weepy drama will draw you in.

Mary Tyler Moore, a housewife meets Christine Lahti, a newsreporter in an aerobics class and they form an instant bond both not having many female friends. Ms. Moore is happily married and lo and behold it ends up Ms. Lahti is having an affair with a married man who is Ms. Moores husband.

How this drama plays out and how the plot develops is very well done and certainly character driven. The acting is superb all around but for me watching the movie 22 years after it was made I am most impressed with Mary Tyler Moore. If this situation happened today the people involved would most certainly be in different places and deal with things a little differently.

Mary Tyler Moore makes her somewhat timid housewife who yearns for more very believable and the journey of self discovery she embarks on is very well told. It also provides Ms. Moore wirth some excellent scenes. She truly becomes this character and her emotions are believably raw. She makes the otherwise datedness of this movie not an issue. Her character is timeless and you believe she could be from this generation and going through the same processes.

Give yourself a treat and enjoy this quality emotional drama.

I loved this movie! Im only 12, but I thought it was so sweet! Ms. Moore went from Laura Petrie/Mary Richards image, to Beth Jarret, then back to Laura. I thought it was so mean of the husband to cheat on such a sweet, loyal, and devoted lady. The only thing about this movie was that Holly (Mary Tyler Moore) looked so much older than her husband in the movie!!! Was she supposed to be younger than she actually was? Mary Tyler Moore is my favorite actress, so maybe that is why I like this movie, but I really did think it was so cute!!! And in the end...(sorry if this spoils it) does Harry go with Holly? It doesnt make it clear...not to me anyhow.

I liked it a lot when it was released and decided it was one of those Id like to have on hand. So much violence on the screen these days, its nice to settle in and smile through an entire movie!

How old is this film? 20-25 years old - one of Brodericks first. Great acting by all, hardly seems dated - except some references to a microwave as a high-tech kitchen gadget. If you thought you liked this film when it came out, you still will.

If you want to laugh this is the movie for you. If you were a child who wished for magic to happen... this would have been a dream come true. I paid $60.00 for a VHS of this movie just to own it because it was my all time favorite movie and to this day is still on my top 10! It never gets old.

Son House is the most important and influential Delta Bluesman to ever live he was a major influence to Muddy Waters & Robert Johnson and every one else including me. Buy this C.D. it is very essential stuff this is hardcore Delta Blues there are some trks with Son House in a band setting with Willie Brown and others (perfect example of what a DeltaBlues jam session probally sounded like). These are field recordings and I mean they were actually recorded outside on trk.4 "Shetland Pony Blues" you actually hear a steam locomotive (train) go buy in the background. If your a aspiring blues guitar player get this if your a fan of the Blues your C.D. collection is seriously lacking if this is not part of it. also get "Masters of the Delta Blues, The Friends of Charlie Patton" all of Son Houses earliest recorings are on there (1930) with some other Delta Blues Legends

Son House taught Robert Johnson the slide blues. Son House taught Muddy Waters. When Son House started performing at Blues festivals again in the mid 1960s, some of Muddys younger band members would start to go off for a smoke or whatever when the old man came on stage. Muddy wouldnt let them. Muddy Waters would tell all his band members to be quiet and pay attention when the man played because even compared with Muddy, this was the real deal.

Rediscovered in Rochester, New York, relearning to play the guitar, (how this country abuses the masters that come from its people, particularly its Black people), put back on the stage by the folk revivals blues section.

People outside of the blues life focus on the guitar playing or the rhythm of the singing, but where the power comes from is the feeling and the words that are put together, the life and the meaning of the blues. Son House in his youth and his old age, on this and his other sides, always gave it.

So Like Muddy Waters, I would like you to know that
Son House is the real deal.

Ferocious Intensity

This disc features the ferocious intensity and masterful singing, not to mention beautiful lyrics, of Son House. This material is different than both his original Paramount Recordings and his stuff from the 1960s. He is in great form on this record, and although the liner notes are skimpy and the cd looks like it could have been manufactured by a fourteen year old boy who downloads Country Blues all day (reminds me of me, just a decade or so ago!), the disc is not only well-worth owning, but is one of the greatest Country Blues cds that I can think of. Every song is excellent, and the driving intensity is relentless. This disc is strongly recommended.

The Real Blues--Raw and Dirty

This collection is essential to any blues collection...you cannot truly appreciate the blues until youve heard these recordings.

Son House is my favorite blues performer. No one--not even his proteges Robert Johnson or Muddy Waters--could match him when it came to the raw emotion. Sure, Robert inspired later blues-rock giants like the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Stevie Ray Vaughn (to name a few...) and Muddy revolutionized the blues by inventing electricity. But this collection, when coupled with the album "The Complete Recorded Works of Son House & the Great Delta Blues Singers" (ASIN: B000000J26--recorded in 1930 another essential disc), offers the listener a true glimpse into history.

The first few tracks include House singing and playing guitar with his band: Willie Brown (who has since attained legendary status as his name is mentioned in Robert Johnsons lyrics he was also was the central character in the 1986 movie "Crossroads") on harmonica, and Fiddlin Joe Martin on mandolin. These songs are amazing. The only word I can use to describe Houses slide guitar technique is FEROCIOUS. His mixture of slams and slaps, when combined with the shouts, moans, and grunts of his vocals, is nothing short of frightening. "Walking Blues"--which, of course, was a hit for both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters but was written by House--is one particular standout. It is nearly seven minutes long (House is famous for his "epic" performances...in concert, his songs were known to exceed twenty minutes), a relentless barrage of blues. "Levee Camp Moan" is another strong point. The rhythms and shouts are incomparable.

Perhaps the best analogy is "a frontal assault on the soul".

The remaining songs are Houses solo efforts, although the striking force has not deminished at all. In fact, they may be even more powerful--its hard to believe that only ONE guy is singing...!

When House was rediscovered during the 60s blues revival, he recorded his first and only studio album in 1965 ("Father of the Delta Blues"--ASIN: B000002877) for the Columbia label. Most who have heard of Son House know him based on these recordings alone. There is no arguement that this is a magnificent album--the emotional quality has only increased with is age. But while the sound quality is definitely better than these early field recordings (mono recordings into a single microphone in the stockyard of a train depot--you can even hear railway sounds in the background!!), Houses old age hindered the ferocity of his slide guitar playing, forcing his tempo to slow down. If you want to hear the true capabilities of the man who I think is the greatest bluesman who ever lived, you must listen to these Library of Congress recordings (and then check out "...and the Great Delta Blues Singers").

These 1941-1942 recordings are the only ones ever made of Eddie "Son" House playing with a band, and this 19-track disc collects all 15 songs originally issued on Biographs "Delta Blues" album and adds four more tracks, none of which are sung by House ("Fo Clock Blues", "Camp Hollers", an incomplete "Special Rider Blues", and the instrumental "Key Of Minor").

Folklorist Alan Lomax came to Mississippi in late August 1941, bringing with him a 300-pound "portable" disc-cutting machine, and cut five acetate masters - the first four tracks on this album plus "Delta Blues".
Now, these cuts may not quite match the power of Houses ferocious 1930 Paramount recordings, but barely anything does, and these are tremendous recordings in their own right.
Perhaps the chatter of the other three musicians on the first three tracks, and the sound of Joe Martin picking his mandolin, dulls the raw intensity of Son Houses music a little, but you can still hear why Muddy Waters was so much in awe of Son House, stating that "back where I came from, down in the Delta, Son House was the king!"

The 1941 recordings were cut in the back room of Clacks country store in Robinsonville by Lake Cormorant in Mississippi, with guitarist Willie Brown (another former playing partner of Charley Patton), "Fiddlin" Joe Martin - who actually played mandolin - and harpist Leroy Williams. At one point, you can actually hear a train passing by outside.

The remaining numbers (which include a longer version of "The Jinx Blues") were cut the following summer, and on these tracks, House performs alone. This is where the power and intensity of House truly shines through, showcasing what an effective guitar player he really was. Son House may not have been Charlie Christian, but his loud, grinding, strongly rhytmic playing, filled with wailing slide riffs, was the perfect background for his huge voice and emotionally charged singing.

Among the highlights of this collection are "Delta Blues", superbly performed with only Leroy Williams backing House up, "Low Down Dirty Dog Blues" and "Depot Blues", which features some of the most impressive guitar playing House ever comitted to tape, "Walking Blues" (especially the 1941 version), and "The Jinx Blues", set to an effective shuffle beat. Just listen to the way House snaps his bass string against the fretboard!
This collection is one of the all-time great documents on early Delta blues. The sound is as good as can be expected, and this is a worthy testament to one of the most important figures in modern popular music.

This 30-song collection of field recordings from 1934-1946 accurately reflect the role music played in the the everyday lives of rural America. When you listen to these songs, not only do you hear the joys and fears and sorrows of the performers lives, you often hear in the background children laughing, dogs barking, clocks ticking, trucks driving by. These are not professional musicians, but real people who deliver their songs with an intensity and honesty you cant find in the recording studio.

Each performer has his own unique story. Turner Junior was a blind street musician who accompanies himself on harmonica on the spiritual "When I Lay My Burden Down." He philosphically tells Alan Lomax that when you leave this earthly life "youll see with a spiritual eye." A young Ora Dell Graham was attending the Drew Colored High School (which also schooled elementary students) where she recites a couple of playground rhymes. The liner notes tell us she would not live to see her twenty-first year. She was killed during a holdup.

This collection also covers a wide range of the American musical experience. "Rock Island Line" is performed by a group of convicts at the Arkansas Cummins State Farm. The traditional folk song "Soldiers Joy" is performed (in Lomaxs words) by "two blind men and three day laborers." "Creek Lullaby" is sung a capella by a young Native American girl identified only as Margaret, whose haunting vocal is made all the more memorable by singing the song in Creek. Fiddler Jess Morris was a working cowboy in Texas when he recorded "Goodbye, Old Paint."

Each song on this collection has a fascinating story behind it, and the accompanying 40-page booklet tells them all in loving and meticulous detail. The importance of the exhaustive work of John and Alan Lomax can not be overstated. These historical recordings would be lost to time if not for their efforts. It is impossible to listen to these recordings without being moved. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I purchased this CD so I could listen to Sea Lion Woman, a song I heard during the final credits to The Generals Daughter. The other 29 songs were an added bonus. Some of these songs, recorded in the 30s and 40s, are a real joy to listen to. Also included with the CD is a small booklet telling you about each song. To hear "Pullin the Skif" and "Shortenin Bread", only to learn that the young singer died in a hold-up she perpetrated before her twenty-first birthday just grabs the heart.

Haunting ballads, stories and lively dance tunes sung by "regular people" (including Woody Guthrie) provide a musical history of rare breadth. If you are looking for slickness and glitz, this CD is not for you. If, on the other hand, you enjoy honest music, are interested in folk history, and perhaps are a closet (or shower) singer yourself, you will enjoy this glimpse into the souls of people whose spirits fill these songs.

An added bonus is the booklet that is included. It provides background on the Library of Congresss Folk Archive and the field recordings done by John, Alan, and Elizabeth Lomax in the late 30s to mid-40s. It also gives a short song and artist history for each track. The fact that one child singer died before her 21st birthday makes her song especially haunting.

Many of us live comfortably insulated, yuppified, sanitized lives. These recordings remind us where we came from. Most importantly, they demonstrate the power of music, that it feeds our souls and gives us strength. We all have that power to make music. Some of us have just forgotten how to do it, or have been told we should not try to sing or play. These songs help us remember on many levels, and show us that making music is a blessing we are all capable of enjoying.

THE CONGRESS OF VIENNA is an album of vintage ballroom dance music played by The Brassworks, a six-piece brass band based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The dance styles on the album include Waltz, Polka, Schottische, Mazurka, Galop, Quadrille, March, Reel, Varsouvienne, and Zwiefache. It features classics from Johann Strauss, Jr., Eduard Strauss, Louis Moreau Gottschalk and John Philip Sousa, operatic excerpts from Verdi and Gounod, folk and traditional tunes from Europe, the British Isles and America, early California and Civil War era dance music, and two recently composed waltzes, including Jay Ungar's "Ashokan Farewell". Most of the arrangements are by the Band's co-founder and director, Frank Beau Davis. The title track, "The Congress of Vienna", is a set of fetchingly bittersweet Swedish folk waltzes. Its English Regency style dance step was developed by John Hertz of Los Angeles. This perfect pairing of step and music in a gracefully figured waltz sequence has become phenomenally popular among West Coast vintage dancers. It is also The Brassworks Band's most requested dance number. Fantastic portrait of a great American. : Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon (1900-1974) was a man whose name is largely unfamiliar today, but whose importance during his long tenure (1945-1969) in the US Senate cannot be overstated. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Morse was influenced by the progressive Republican governor and senator Robert LaFollette, and by the time he came to the University of Oregon as the nation's youngest law school dean at age 29, his independent streak was already pronounced.Elected to the US Senate as a liberal Republican in 1944, Morse left the GOP in 1953, disgusted with both McCarthyism and Eisenhower's choice of the right-wing Richard Nixon as his running mate. After spending two years as the Senate's only Independent, Morse joined the Democratic Party in 1955, finding its progressive stance more congenial to his views. He remained resolutely his own man, however, proving as much a thorn in the side of the Democrats as he was to the Republicans; indeed, Morse remains one of the great mavericks in US political history, a man whose devotion was to the public interest and "clean government" (his term) rather than to popularity and politics-as-usual.Morse's most enduring legacy was his consistent and highly visible opposition to the Vietnam war. With Alaska's Senator Ernest Gruening (an equally fascinating figure), Morse was one of only two votes against the Gulf of Tonkin resolution in 1964. As a former law professor, Morse based his arguments on both the US constitution's rules for military involvement and on his own respect for international law. While history has vindicated his view on the war, it proved to be a politically unpopular stance, and Morse lost his re-election campaign in 1968 to young Republican upstart Bob Packwood (not coincidentally, Gruening lost his re-election bid the same year). The force and integrity of Morse's personality is vividly captured in this film. A man who could not be bought and who could not be swayed from what he felt was right, Morse was variously described as both the "conscience of the senate" and the "tiger of the senate." He was both of these things, and in our time of unchecked executive power and bogus, disastrous overseas ventures in the name of "security," Morse's legacy has never been more admirable or relevant. A true hero.

The Lone Star State uproar attracted attention worldwide. The Republicans won this showdown, gaining six additional seats from Texas and protecting the one endangered Republican incumbent. This outcome has undeniably affected national policy-making and has made it more difficult for Democrats to regain a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Some of the methods used by DeLay to achieve this result, however, led to his criminal indictment and ultimately to his downfall.
